Derryck Noser

Instructor

Derryck Noser fell in love with the drums when he was about 12 years-old after his uncle gifted him a butcher block Rogers drum kit. Guitar and bass soon followed––and music became an anchor, challenge, and refuge.

Derryck began playing and recording in bands as a teenager in Houston, and after graduating from the University of North Texas with a degree in business and concentration in music, he returned to his hometown, where he continued to write and perform. After almost a decade of experience teaching music, Derryck joined the Bojangles crew to instruct students of all ages on the drums, bass, and guitar. Most weeks, Houstonians can also still catch him playing rock, blues, or honky tonk with bands such as Bloodhound, Western Jelly, and Jill Donahue and the Edge at venues including the Continental Club, Cottonwood, Cowboy Surfer, Shady Acres, and others. An active songwriter, Derryck is also actively involved in Dematto, a recording project focused on synchronization licensing.

While having fun is a must, Derryck emphasizes that a key goal of his instruction is to help students develop a dynamic understanding of music that includes perspectives from multiple instruments. “I love teaching music because I think having an intimate understanding of the nuances that make music work is a sign of advanced intelligence,” Derryck says. “I love seeing the light go on in someone’s eyes when they discover they can do it, too.”
